7. David Hardie was the seventh child of John Hardie and Isabel Cousin. He was born 18 February 1798 and baptized in Saline in Fifeshire, Scotland. He farmed at Markle Mains farm in East Lothian, Scotland, beginning in 1830 until his death.
David Hardie (7.) was married in Prestonkirk church, East Linton, East Lothian on 28 September 1833 and on 29 September 1883 at Gladsmuir church, East Lothian to Christian Black (born 10 June 1810 Kinglassie, Scotland; died 12 December 1891 age 81 years; daughter of Catherine Inglis and John Black, farmer of Bankhead of Inchdarnie). David Hardie died 29 April 1856 in East Lothian, Scotland, at age 58 years. He is buried in the Prestonkirk churchyard with his wife, his daughter Christina and his son David. After the death of David Hardie, David’s widow Christian continued to farm at Markle mains until about the time when their fourth child also named David was old enough to take over. From then she lived for a while in Haddington next door to her son John and later lived in Edinburgh with him. Catherine died at Auckland House, 57 Fountainhall Road, Edinburgh on 12 December 1891 at the age of 81. Children of David Hardie and Christian Black:

She was married on 31 October 1860 in Scotland to James Hope Robertson (born 27 March 1820; died 8 June 1894; son of James Robertson and Christian Hope). He was married on 18 April 1896 to Helen Clarkson (born 22 May 1870 in Auckland; died 30 May 1951; daughter of William Clarkson (1835-1905) and Helen Easton (1837-1909)). 7.1.8. John Robertson, the eighth child of James Robertson and Catherine Hardie, was born 12 June 1872. He was married on 4 April 1907 to Rosina Clarkson (called “Lil”; born 8 December 1875; died 24 July 1965; sister of Helen Clarkson). John Robertson died in September 1953.
7.1.9. Catherine Robertson, the ninth child of James Robertson and Catherine Hardie, was born 24 December 1874. She died 9 October1903.
7.1.10. Thomas Robertson, the tenth child of James Robertson and Catherine Hardie, was born in 1876. He was married to Aggie. Thomas Robertson died in June 1945.
7.1.11. Joseph Hardie Robertson, the eleventh child of James Robertson and Catherine Hardie, was born 5 August 1878. He was married on 15 April to Alice Ward. He died 26 November 1956.
7.2. John Hardie, second child of David Hardie and Christian Black, was born 9 June 1836 and baptized on 20 July 1836 at Prestonkirk in East Linton. John Hardie was married on 5 June 1861 to Jane Young in Markinch, Fife. Just prior to his father’s death in 1856, John commenced as an ironmonger in Haddington, having borrowed from his father the sum of £900, and by 1881 he employed 10 men and 2 boys. Later he and his family moved to Edinburgh where he was an export agent. Children of John Hardie and Jane Young:

Isabella Hardie was married to Charles Jameson Christie on 27 September 1860 in Prestonkirk, East Lothian, Scotland. Charles was first married to Janet Anderson Rintoul (child of Robert Rintoul and Elizabeth Jameson, the sister of Charles’ mother Helen), and they had one child, Charles Jameson Christie born 5 January 1860 in Prestonkirk, East Lothian, Scotland. 7.4. David Hardie, fourth child of David Hardie and Christian Black, was born 26 May 1840 at Markle Mains and baptized on 30 June 1840 at Prestonkirk. David Hardie was married on 21 April 1894 to Alison Cunningham (born in Edinburgh in 1851; died 21 April 1946 at age 95 years; daughter of Alexander Cunningham and Jane Lawson). He farmed Markle Mains farm with his father and continued until 1880 after his father’s death. He took over Biel Grange when James Robertson emigrated to New Zealand in 1879, and David farmed it until his death. He died 19 September 1898 age 58 years at Biel Grange farm, Stenton, Scotland. David Hardie and Alison Cunningham had no children.
7.5. James Hardie fifth child of David Hardie and Christian Black, was born 24 February 1842 in Haddington and baptized on 16 March 1842 at Prestonkirk. James Hardie emigrated to New Zealand in December 1862 with his brother Joseph, leaving from the Downs in the brig Nimroud, and became a hardware merchant at first working for the firm of E Porter & Co in which firm he became a partner around 1871. The firm grew swiftly and had 2 branches apart from its head office in Queen Street. In about 1912 a new building was built specially for him. It is thought to have had one of the largest unsupported spans when constructed. The firm of Hardie Brothers occupied the ground and first floors when this building was completed and for many years the firm occupied the site which ran between Queen and High Streets in Auckland City. The building which still stands today is an historic building. He was on married 1 November 1867 to Margaret Campbell (daughter of Samuel Campbell). He was a patron of the Auckland Bowling Club, an office to which his great- nephew George Hardie (7.7.4.3) was appointed in the bowling club’s centennial year. James Hardie died 29 October 1915 in Dunedin, New Zealand. Children of David Hardie and Margaret Campbell:
7.5.1. James Clayworth Hardie, the first child of James Hardie and Margaret Campbell, was born in 1870 in New Zealand. He was married to Mary Wylie McClellan (duaghter of James McClellan of Wellington). He died on 4 December 1927 in Auckland and is buried in Purewa Cemetery.His obituary describes him as “a keen motorist and a life member of the Auckland Automobile Association. He was formerly a member of the Auckland Kennel Club and the New Zealand Fox Terrier Club and a keen breeder of wirehaired fox terriers. He was also for many years a member of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and an enthusiastic yachtsman”. There is known to be cup donated by James and his brother Lionel but this was for many years lost by the squadron.
7.5.2. Claudia Mary Hardie was born in 1872. The 1891 census for Edinburgh sdhows her living with her uncle James and his family. She was married to Hall. She died 14 May 1929 in Auckland, and she is buried in Purewa Cemetery in Auckland.
7.5.3. Percy Campbell Hardie was born in 1878. He died on 30 April 1909 in an accident driving a horse and trap while on his way to spend some time shooting with friends at Waingaro in the Waikato. He is buried in Purewa Cemetery in Auckland.
7.5.4. Lionel Proudfoot Hardie was born14 January 1883 in New Zealand. He died on 8 February 1959 in Auckland and is buried in Purewa Cemetery.
7.5.5. Isabella Clayworth Hardie. She was married to Walter Murray Galbraith son of Helen Sands and Walter Galbraith (that is she married her cousin who was descended from Isabella Hardie and John Sands).

7.6. Christina Hardie, the sixth child of David Hardie and Christian Black, was born 30 November 1843 and baptised 31 Decmber 1843 at Prestonkirk. She died 19 February 1872 at age 28 years in Scotland, and she is buried with her parents.
7.7. Joseph Hardie, the seventh child of David Hardie and Christian Black, was born 8 April 1846 in Haddington and baptised 17 May 1846 at Prestonkirk. He emigrated to New Zealand in December 1862 with his brother James. He farmed in New Zealand, and he was a ferry-man. He was married first on 16 May 1871 in Matakohe, Kaipara Harbour, Northland, New Zealand to Caroline Harper (born 15 May 1848 in Handsworth, England; died 28 July 1884 in Paparoa). For some years following their marriage Dave and Maggie lived in Hamilton in the Waikato where Dave had a carrying business. The family resided in a house in London Street not far from the yard from which he operated. George remembers walking through empty fields behind the house to visit the yard and also on his way to school at Hamilton West Primary which was then located on the top of a hill in the centre of the town. The school has since been relocated but the site is used for the Waikato Polytechnic. Among the many tasks he carried out was the carrying of bricks some of which were used in the extension of the Hamilton Post Office which was then located at the southern end of the town. Dave decided that his heart lay in farming and a return to Whangarei ensued. Dave Hardie died 21 October 1947 in Whangarei. Children:

The years between 1911 and 1913 were spent in Hamilton where he attended Hamilton West School for his very early schooling, After the family’s return, he attended the local school at Glenbervie close to the family farm and attended Whangarei Boys High School. George later went to Auckland where he worked for the Auckland Harbour Board and a firm of engineers James J Niven until around 1936. At about this time he saw an advertisment for the sale of a business which had links into the refrigeration industry which was largely still in its infancy in Auckland but had much potential. Together with some colleagues he acquired the business and thus was born the firm of Ellis, Hardie Symington. George worked hard for many years and gained a reputation as an astute businessman, with contracts to such firms as R& W Hellaby Limited which was quite a name in the meat industry, Turners & Growers a family run firm noted in the fruit and vegetable marketing business , and others. In about 1944 he fulfilled one of his dreams in buying a small block of 17 acres and the family moved there while George commuted daily to the city. In his later years George took up bowls and like James Hardie became patron. He was particularly proud to have been the club’s patron in its centennial year. George Hardie died 30 January 2000 in Auckland. Children:
