10. Helen Hardie was born in 1802, probably at Broomie Knowe, and baptized on 5 December 1802 in Saline, Fife. She was the youngest of John and Isabel Hardie’s children to survive infancy. Helen Hardie was married on 3 July 1824 to William Strong Spence (born 4 October 1805 in Torryburn, Dunfermline, Fife; baptized 13 October 1805; died 11 April 1876 in Talladega, Alabama, and buried in Thornhill Cemetery; son of John Spence) in Saline, Fife. William Spence was a farm laborer at the time of the marriage and nearly three years younger than Helen. According to Lillian Martin writing in John Hardie of Thornhill and His Family, the marriage of Helen Hardie to William Spence was not approved by her family. As evidence she cites a contemporary letter from John Hardie:

On 4 June 1825 John Hardie, her brother who had come to the United States in 1817, wrote to their elder brother Joseph, “I am very sorry indeed to notice what you say concerning sister Helen, but as matters cannot now be mended, why hold no correspondence with her? [If I could] I would go and see her, cannot you ... ‘forget and forgive’ and should she and her husband behave themselves properly, could you not return it? It must hurt her very much to be forsaken by her Brothers, Sisters and Mother; I feel very much for her situation.”

Although the cause of the rift between Helen and her family was not known to Lillian Martin, it now seems apparent from the records of the Parish of Saline, Fife. According to those records, the first child of William Strong Spence and Helen Hardie was baptized on 6 August 1824 in Saline. Consequently, Helen Hardie must have been many months pregnant at the time of her marriage to William Spence. The name of the child is not given in the records, so it may not have survived infancy.

Helen and William Spence evidently move to Alloa, Clackmannan for their next four children were baptized there. William’s sister Agnes lived in nearby Alva. William and Helen may also have lived in Ireland because their child David is said to have been born there in 1838. William’s sister Agnes may also have lived in Ireland, as well. In 1848 Helen and William Spence emigrated to the United States with their family and Helen’s niece, Isabella Hardie.

William Spence and Helen Hardie Spence came to Talladega, Alabama, in 1848. Helen’s brother John died in August 1848, so it is likely that Helen and her family arrived after John’s death. William Spence practiced veterinary medicine and maintained a farm in Munford, Alabama. Helen Hardie Spence died on 11 June 1886, and she is buried in the cemetery at Thornhill together with William Spence. Children of Helen Hardie Spence and William Spence.

Isabella Hardie and John McArthur

According to John Hardie of Thornhill and His Family by Lillian Galt Martin, John Hardie’s sister Helen Hardie Spence and her husband William Spence came to the United States in 1848 with their children, and they also brought a young woman named Isabella Hardie who has been identified as Helen’s “niece.” The family bible records Isabella’s birth date as 4 January 1834. Otherwise, the origins of Isabella are something of a mystery.

Although she may have been referred to as a niece, Isabella almost certainly was not the child of any of Helen Hardie Spence’s brothers.

In her book, Lillian Martin identifies Isabella’s father as Helen’s brother David. David Hardie (1798-1856) and his wife Christian Black, while living at Markle Mains farm in East Lothian, did have a daughter named Isabella who was born in 1838 and baptized at Prestonkirk on 19 June 1838. However, according to the Parish records, David’s daughter Isabella was married on 27 September 1860 to Charles Jameson Christie at Prestonkirk. Moreover, the parish Household Entries for Markle Mains show that David’s daughter Isabella and her husband were living on the farm with Isabella’s widowed mother in 1861. Isabella and Charles Christie went on to have five children; three of them were baptized in Pestonkirk and two in Edinburgh. This, of course, would be inconsistent with Isabella’s departure for the United States in 1848.

Moreover, it is not likely that Isabella was the child of any of Helen’s other brothers. Joseph (1787-1845), the oldest of the brothers, never married. John (1796-1848) Hardie’s daughter Mary Isabella Hardie married Taul Bradford. James (1800-1866) Hardie’s daughter Isabella was not born until 20 February 1855.

Isabella Cousen Hardie, the daughter of William (1790-?) Hardie and Catherine McFarlane (spelled “McFarland” in some sources), was born in 1835 and baptized on 5 October 1835 in Kilmadock, Perthshire. This birth date is not the same as Helen’s niece. Moreover, William Hardie and Catherine McFarlane were married on 28 July 1833 in Kilmadock, and Isabella was the second of their eight children. There is no reason why William and Catherine would send their thirteen year old daughter off to America with William’s sister Helen.

John Hardie of Thornhill’s brother James had a twin brother named Robert, and Lillian Martin’s book says: “He was a merchant in Edinburgh and he was unmarried. He died young.” Alexander (1807-?) appears to have died as an infant. This seems to exclude them as the father of Isabella.

It is possible that the term “niece” was imprecisely applied to Isabella, and she was the daughter of another relative of Helen Hardie Spence, such as one of her first cousins.

The parents of John Hardie of Thornhill were John (1760-1833) Hardie and Isabel Cousin. He had four brothers: Francis (chr. 21 June 1762), Joseph (chr. 5 August 1764), William (chr. 13 July 1766), and James (chr. 21 January 1770). All of these children were christened in Clackmannan Parish in Clackmannan. These men would have been Helen Hardie’s uncles, and one of their son’s may have been the father of Isabella.

There is no record that Francis Hardie ever married or ever had any children.

Joseph Hardie married Margaret Salton on 26 June 1795 in Haddington, East Lothian. They had only one child, an unnamed girl who was christened on 29 August 1796 in Haddington. Evidently this child died in infancy, and there is no record of any other children for Margaret and Joseph.

William Hardie was first married to Helen White on 20 November 1784, and their marriage was recorded in both Alloa and Clackmannan parishes. There is no record of any children of William Hardie and Helen White. There is no explanation what became of Helen White. William Hardie was married second on 3 June 1787 to Helen Ramsay, and their marriage is also recorded in the parishes of Alloa and Clackmannan. Again, there is no record of any children of William Hardie and Helen Ramsay. William Hardie may have died soon after his marriage to Helen Ramsay because she was married on 21 December 1788 to Alexander Inglis in a marriage recorded in Clackmannan parish.

James Hardie was married on 14 May 1786 to Mary Cockburn in a marriage recorded in Clackmannan parish; he would have been only sixteen years old. Evidently he emigrated to the United States where he died in 1808. John Hardie of Thornhill stayed in New York with James’ widow, then married to a Mr. Brackett.

All of this leaves us in something of a quandary over the identity of Isabella’s father. Parish records disclose an Isabella Hardie christened on 2 February 1834 at Falkirk in Stirling. This christening date is wholly consistent with the birth date of 4 January 1834 recorded in the family bible. The parents of this Isabella are identified as James Hardie and Mary Walker.

Mary Walker was born 27 June 1813 in Falkirk, Stirling and christened there on 22 July 1813. Her parents were James Walker and Isabelle Gray who were married in Falkirk on 25 April 1813. Thus, when Mary’s mother was married, she was already well along in her pregnancy with Mary.

The marriage of Mary Walker and James Hardie was recorded in the Parish records of Alloa, Clackmannan, and Falkirk, Stirling, on 25 April 1837. They had five additional children after Isabella: Janet, christened 12 February 1839 in Falkirk; Mary, christened 28 February 1844 in Falkirk; Archibald, christened 15 February 1846 in Gorbals, Lanarkshire; and Jane Gray, born 2 December 1847 in Gorbals.

Since Mary Walker was from Falkirk, her marriage to James Hardie was presumably recorded in Alloa because James was a member of the Alloa parish. There is no record of a James Hardie’s birth in any of the Clackmannan parishes between 1784 and 1824, so the father of Isabella must have come to Alloa after his birth. The identity of James Hardie’s parents is obscure for this reason.

James Hardie and Mary Walker were married more than three years after Isabella’s birth. Thus, at the time of her birth, Isabella would have been considered illegitimate.

At the same time that Isabella was born to Mary Walker, Helen Hardie Spence’s fifth child, Robert H. Spence was born on 30 June 1834 and baptized on 3 July 1834 in Alloa, Clackmannan, where Helen and William Spence were living. Mary Walker’s predicament may have produced some sympathy in Helen Hardie Spence, especially since her own marriage preceded her first child’s birth by only a few months. In any event, there must have been some relationship between Helen Hardie Spence and James Hardie to induce her to take Isabella into her family.

The most likely parents for Isabella’s father, James Hardie are William Hardie and Cecelia Oswald. Cecelia Oswald was born in Fife and christened on 8 March 1772 in Kinglassie, Fife. William’s family connections are not apparent. Moreover, there is no record of a marriage between Cecelia Oswald and William Hardie. Between 1797 and 1808 she and a man named William Hardie had seven children, all christened in Dysart, Fife. The second and fourth of these children were named James, indicating that the first died in infancy. The second James was christened in Dysart on 11 October 1804. It is far from certain that he is the father of Isabella Hardie, but proximity in age and location make him the most likely of all the possibilities.

Isabella Hardie and John McArthur’s Family

Isabella Hardie was married on 24 April 1861, in Mobile, Alabama, to John McArthur (born 27 August 1835 in Alva, Clackmannanshire, Scotland; died 25 October 1921) at the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Mobile, Alabama, in a ceremony performed by James M. McLean, according to her marriage license. The application for the license, dated 15 April 1861, did not require her birth date, her parents’ names or her age. Isabella Hardie died of cancer on 19 September 1885, also in Mobile. Her death certificate states that she was buried in the plot in the Magnolia Cemetery owned by John McArthur. Isabella’s death certificate gives her age as 54. John McArthur was the son of Agnes Spence McArthur and Andrew McArthur.

John McArthur’s mother, Agnes Spence, was the sister of William Spence who married Helen Hardie and brought Isabella Hardie to the United States. Agnes Spence and Andrew McArthur, themselves, came to the United States from Ireland in 1852 and landed at New Orleans on 6 January 1853. Among their six children was Isabella’s future husband John who was eighteen years old at the time. Three of Agnes and Andrew McArthur’s children died of yellow fever in Mobile. According to McArthur family tradition, Andrew McArthur had sent his brother-in-law, William Spence, a down payment for a farm in Talladega County, but on arriving in Talladega, Andrew was told the farm was not available. This created many hard feelings between Agnes McArthur’s family and William Spence. However, William Spence did make a bequest to Isabella on his death.
