On 19 July 1833 Euphemia Jaffrey (born on 25 November 1798 in Yester Haddington, East Lothian; daughter of Peter Jaffrey and Euphemia Swain or Swan) gave birth to twins, William and Euphan (or Euphemia). According to the records, the father of the two children was named David Hardie. The children were given the family name “Hardie” although there is no record of a marriage between Euphemia Jaffrey and David Hardie.
By tradition, the descendants of Euphemia Jaffrey have identified the father of William and Euphan as the same David Hardie who was born in 1798 and baptized at Saline, Fife, on 18 February 1798, the seventh child of John Hardie and Isabel Cousin. That David Hardie farmed at Markle Mains in East Lothian and married Christian Black on 1 October 1833, just two months after the birth of the twins.
There are many other people in Scotland named David Hardie of an age who might have been the father of William and Euphan, and there is no official record identifying this particular David Hardie as the father of Euphemia Jaffrey’s children. On the other hand, the tradition is supported by the proximity of Euphemia’s home to David’s residence at Markle Mains. For sources of this information and further information see http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/hardiehistory/ Euphemia Jaffrey died 10 September 1875 in Gladsmuir where she was living with her son and his wife..
