The Hardie family had and has a deep history as Merchants in both Scotland and America. John’s brother Joseph’s store in Kinross continues today under the name John & J.S. Sands (a family relationship). John himself upon moving to the Talladega area established a store, John Hardie & Co., at Mardisville just south of Thornhill. Our “Gift Shop” honors that Hardie family tradition.

John Hardie of Thornhill and his Family by Lilian Galt Martin written in 1988 is the defiintive genealogy resource for the Family of John and Mary Hall Hardie of Thornhill. It also includes information on John’s parents, and other family relations such as Mary’s Hall family, the Sands family and John’s sister Helen’s Spence family.

BROTHERS IN ARMS
Brothers in Arms, the Hardie Family in the Civil War by William H. Jardie, Jr., was origianlly published in 1994 and distributed to all members of the Thornhill Foundation. A reprint has been created to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Thornhill Foundation in 2024.

“HARDIE” TARTAN MERCHANDISE
No official Hardie tartan exists. However, our Hardie family is allowed to wear the Farquharson tartan. For the 50th Reunion, we partnered with Rablogan Castle of Scotland which is located in Arlington, Vermont. Proprietor Robert Jones was most helpful in navigating the tartan maze and have an amazing selection of tartan merchandise (including Farquharson in both Ancient and Modern) and all things Scottish.
