General Kemper Williams
Founded by Leila Hardie Moore Williams (1.11.3) and her husband General L. Kemper Williams, the Historic New Orleans Collection (HNOC) was established so that their extensive collections would be available to the public. Upon their deaths the Kemper and Leila Williams Foundation was established to ensure stable, long-term financial support for The Collection.
The Thornhill Foundation has established a collection of family letters, papers, photographs, and other memorabilia entitled the Thornhill Foundation Papers. This collection of memorabilia, donated by members of the Hardie family, is on extended loan to the Historic New Orleans Collection, and may be seen there by interested family members and other historians.
Additional donations of Hardie family memorabilia are encouraged and may be made to the Thornhill Foundation Papers at the Historic New Orleans Collection. There is an specific process, however. Items should be offered for donation to the Thornhill Foundation and upon acceptance by the Board are then officially offered as a donation and accepted after review by the HNOC. Please contact us at thornhillfoundation@gmail.com and we can guide you through the process to make sure that your items are included in the official Hardie family collection.
There is currently no “list” of Hardie family items in the collection. You can see a general listing of items in the Thornhill Foundation Papers on their webiste under Research/Catalog/Thornhill Foundation Papers. Very few items in the THP have been digitized. If you are interested in a particular item, the staff at the HNOC can assist in determining if the item is in the collection. We will gradually post images of items on this website (password protected) which are in the collection as available to us.
